Woonsocket

Het Pillsbury House ons logeeradres vlak bij Sanne in de buurt 3 km. verderop in Woonsocket. Wel in een andere staat!

Woonsocket, Rhode Island is a small city of about 43,000 located in north central Rhode Island, right next to the Massachusetts border. We are in the heart of the Blackstone Valley, birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. There's a lot of history here; from the first sawmill in the 1660's to an uprising against the Catholic Church in the late 1920's to the boom years of the World Wars and the bust years of the 60's, Woonsocket has seen it all. One of the most important influences in Woonsocket were the many French-Canadian families who came to the area to work in the mills. Even now, you can hear French spoken in our shops and restaurants. Even our English is touched by the French language: here, we say, "close the light," and we park our cars "side by each."

Blackstone

DE reden om naar Amerika te gaan was het highschool year van Sanne in Blackstone. Natuurlijk zijn we haar gaan opzoeken, zeker het hoogtepunt van onze vakantie. Sanne woont bij heel lieve aardige mensen in een leuk stukje New-England. Blackstone zelf heeft bijna Tilburg-achtige trekjes, het is niet zo'n grote stad maar is wel onstaan uit de textielindustrie. Hier vooral vanwege het gebruik van de Blackstone river als energiebron.

New-England

Een vakantie met een heleboel hoogtepunten, ik ga er 'n paar laten zien zoals de Plimoth Plantation een openluchtmuseum waar een dorpje van de eerste Pilgrimfathers is nagemaakt. Heel goed gedaan de 'bewoners' blijven totaal in hun rol. Vooral als ze horen dat je uit Nederland komt ze vragen bijvoorbeeld of we uit Breda gevlucht zijn omdat daar net de Spanjaarden binnengevallen zijn! Er is zelfs een bewoonster die nog Nederlands spreekt ook. Heel leuk, compleet met tirades tegen de paus. Ik ga zeker meer over deze geschiedenis lezen.

thuis

Nu alweer thuis, het is omgevlogen. Een supervakantie!

Hull

Naar ons laatste adres in Hull via een museum in Plymouth waar de Pilgrim fathers voor het eerst een kolonie stichtten.

Sandwich

Sandwich het oudste stadje op Cape Cod, met een wel heel bijzonder logeeradres. The painted lady het huis links van de Belfry.
